Sandra Bullock is looking back on one of the biggest nights of her career — and revealing that she barely remembers it.
Bullock, 62, won the Academy Award for Best Actress in March 2010 for her performance in The Blind Side, but the actress said she was far more focused on being a new mom than celebrating Hollywood’s biggest honor.
During the Thursday, September 10, episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, cohost Mark Consuelos asked Bullock what she remembered most about the night she won.
“Nothing,” she joked.
Bullock explained that she had secretly adopted her son, Louis, months earlier and was dealing with the exhaustion that came with caring for a newborn.
“I had maybe two hours of sleep,” she said, adding that Louis had acid reflux and was waking up every two hours.
Because the adoption had not yet been made public, Bullock said almost no one knew she had a baby waiting for her at home.
Rather than focusing on the afterparties, the actress said she was thinking about getting back to Louis.
“I wanted to do the feeding because I knew who was there with him was probably struggling,” she recalled.
Bullock said that when she finally got home, she was still wearing her Oscar dress because she could not get out of it easily.
She remembered sitting with Louis in her lap while the Oscar statue was left on the floor nearby.
Looking back, Bullock said the unusual circumstances may actually have helped her deal with the pressure of winning such a major award.
She described the Oscars as overwhelming and said being exhausted gave her something more important to focus on.
Bullock also revealed that she stayed through the ceremony but left the post-show celebration as quickly as possible.
After waiting to have her name engraved on the statue, she said she greeted people briefly before heading home.
At the time, Bullock had initially planned to adopt Louis with then-husband Jesse James. The couple separated in 2010, and Bullock ultimately adopted Louis as a single parent. She later adopted daughter Laila in 2015.
Bullock has also recently reflected on that difficult period of her life, saying her work on Gravity became especially meaningful because it coincided with her divorce and her efforts to protect and raise her young son.
More than 16 years after her Oscar win, Bullock says the memory that stands out most is not the trophy itself — but going home to her baby.
