The new Reacher spinoff Neagley arrived with plenty of surprises, but one of the biggest came from an unexpected cameo by Jerry O’Connell.
Creator Nicholas Wootton revealed that O’Connell was essentially the first choice for the role and said he couldn’t remember seriously considering anyone else.
In the first season of the Prime Video series, viewers are introduced to a suspicious drug that is preparing to hit the market.
O’Connell appears in a fake commercial as the face of the medication, giving the actor a chance to bring a more comedic and intentionally over-the-top energy into the otherwise intense world of the show.
Wootton said O’Connell immediately understood what the scene needed.
According to the creator, the actor arrived ready to work, understood the humor behind the fake advertisement and fully embraced how strange the moment was supposed to feel within the larger story.
Wootton praised O’Connell for being both funny and easy to work with, saying he “nailed it” and was perfect for the cameo.
The appearance is particularly unexpected because Neagley comes from the same action-heavy universe as Reacher.
Based on Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, Reacher stars Alan Ritchson as a former U.S. Army military police officer who travels from place to place and frequently finds himself confronting dangerous criminals.
Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley was introduced in Reacher before becoming the central character of her own spinoff.
Season 1 of Neagley follows her as she searches for answers after the suspicious death of an old friend.
Alongside Sten, the cast includes Greyston Holt, Jasper Jones, Adeline Rudolph, Matthew Del Negro and Damon Herriman.
Even though O’Connell’s appearance was relatively brief, his involvement made a strong impression on the cast.
Holt said he was excited simply knowing O’Connell was part of the project because Stand by Me, one of O’Connell’s best-known films, is his favorite movie of all time.
Although Holt wasn’t on set during O’Connell’s filming, he admitted the cameo brought out his inner fan.
Jones also had a previous connection to O’Connell, recalling that he once took a selfie with him near an elevator at Comic-Con.
For Wootton, however, the cameo worked because O’Connell immediately recognized the unusual tone of the scene and committed to it completely.
Reacher and Neagley are both streaming on Prime Video.
