Bret Michaels is stepping away from the stage for the time being as he continues recovering from recent surgery.
The Poison frontman, 63, has canceled his remaining scheduled concerts after doctors determined that he needs additional rest following his recent kidney stone procedure and other surgeries.
“Following Bret Michaels’ comeback show at The Bowl at Sugar Hill, doctors and paramedics determined immediately after the show that he still needs additional rest and recovery from his recent surgeries,” a statement shared through Michaels’ Facebook page on Saturday, August 21, read.
The statement added that Michaels will take “the next several months off to heal and get back to 100 percent.”
Michaels performed at The Bowl at Sugar Hill in Georgia on Friday, August 21, marking his first concert since undergoing surgery the previous month. After the show, however, his medical team advised that returning to the road so soon was not in his best interest.
“We will be pulling Bret off the road for the time being,” Dr. Abby Borhan and Dr. Patel said in a separate statement.
According to the doctors, Michaels wanted to attempt the comeback performance, but they believe he now needs a slower recovery period. They also pointed to summer heat and humidity as additional concerns because of the potential effect on his blood sugar levels.
Michaels Entertainment Group apologized to fans affected by the cancellations, noting that the team had been looking forward to several upcoming performances, including The Mountain Music Festival and private events.
“We now look ahead and to Bret being able to return healthy, strong and ready to rock,” the statement said.
Michaels revealed in July that he had undergone surgery after a kidney stone failed to pass on its own. He said at the time that he had continued performing through intense pain during several shows before eventually being admitted to the hospital.
The musician later confirmed that the operation had been completed successfully and said he was doing everything possible to recover and return to performing once he received a complete clean bill of health.
For now, Michaels’ focus will remain on rest and recovery before he makes another return to the stage.
