Dutton Ranch may have found success on Paramount+, but its second season is shaping up to bring some significant changes both in front of and behind the camera.
The Yellowstone spinoff, led by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, premiered in 2026 after the original series concluded in 2024. The show expanded the franchise beyond Yellowstone while continuing the story of two of its most popular characters.
Following its season 1 run, Dutton Ranch was renewed for a second season. Reilly and Hauser have both suggested that ideas are already developing for where the story goes next.
“I think we’re taking it one season at a time,” Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2026.
She also hinted that the team already has a sense of how season 2 could begin following the events of the finale.
“I think we have some ideas about season 2, with where we left season 1,” she said.
But the next chapter will arrive with several major changes.
A New Showrunner Takes Over
One of the biggest shifts happened behind the scenes.
Chad Feehan, who completed work as showrunner on season 1, will not return in the same role for season 2. According to reports cited in the original story, there was alleged tension surrounding how the first season’s production was managed.
Neither Reilly, Hauser nor other key figures involved with the series publicly confirmed those claims.
Benjamin Cavell has since been brought in to take over as showrunner for season 2.
Hauser appeared to take a practical approach to the change, noting that turnover behind the scenes is not unusual in television.
“Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting,” he said.
Reilly similarly emphasized the collaborative nature of producing the series and said she remained proud of what the team accomplished during its first season.
Ed Harris Could Have a Larger Role
Ed Harris is expected to return after previously revealing that he had a two-year agreement connected to Dutton Ranch.
His season 1 experience, however, was not entirely what he expected.
Harris publicly expressed frustration over the limited use of his character, Everett McKinney, explaining that he sometimes felt “underused and inconsequential.”
The actor said he raised those concerns with the production team and was told that Everett could have more to do during the next season.
Despite his frustration while filming, Harris said that after watching the completed season, he felt better about how his character ultimately fit into the story.
Several Characters May Be Gone
Season 1 also created unavoidable cast changes through multiple character deaths.
Jai Courtney’s character is unlikely to return after being killed off. Hart Denton’s Chet and Ray McKinnon’s Dwight also suffered onscreen deaths.
Those departures could significantly alter the supporting cast surrounding Beth and Rip when the story resumes.
Taylor Sheridan’s Role Is Evolving
Another major difference between Dutton Ranch and the original Yellowstone is Taylor Sheridan’s level of involvement.
Sheridan created the wider television universe and served as an executive producer on Dutton Ranch, but according to Reilly, he was not involved in the day-to-day creative process in the same way he had been on Yellowstone.
Reilly admitted that moving forward without Sheridan’s direct creative leadership initially made her uncertain about how Beth would work in the new series.
She said the experience forced her to essentially rediscover the character in a different creative environment.
At the same time, Reilly suggested Sheridan could become more involved in conversations about season 2.
“We talk to him now about what the next season could be, and he wants to be involved,” she said.
That means the upcoming season could represent another evolution for Dutton Ranch — one shaped by a new showrunner, changing cast dynamics and potentially renewed creative input from the man who launched the Yellowstone universe.
For viewers, season 2 will therefore be about more than simply continuing Beth and Rip’s story. It will also show how the series adapts after a substantial behind-the-scenes transition while trying to maintain the identity that helped make its first season successful.
