Tensions between Nathan Gallagher and Joe Bradley are getting even more complicated on Below Deck Mediterranean — and Max Salvador has suddenly found himself caught in the middle.
During the Monday, August 17 episode of the Bravo series, Max joined the crew aboard Akira One while Nathan was away recovering from a back injury.
Nathan’s absence created an opportunity for Joe to temporarily step into the bosun position, putting him in charge of the deck team. Max began working under Joe, and the new arrangement appeared to open the door for Max to potentially move up the ranks.
But things changed at the end of the episode when Max received a private message from Nathan.
“I’m sure Joe’s been in your ear. I’m gonna get back to the boat at some point, and I need you,” Nathan wrote.
He then made Max an offer: “Have my back and I’ll for sure make you lead deckhand. Swear.”
The message left Max in an uncomfortable position.
Nathan had previously passed Max over for the lead deckhand role, while Joe was now offering him the same opportunity if Nathan did not return to his position as bosun. That means Max could ultimately be forced to choose between two competing promises as the power struggle between Nathan and Joe continues.
Nathan and Joe were not always rivals.
The pair became close after joining Below Deck Med during Season 9, but their friendship later deteriorated amid ongoing personal and professional tension.
Season 11 has already shown several moments in which Nathan became frustrated with Joe, adding another layer to their strained relationship.
Joe previously told Us that watching the season back had been revealing for him.
“Watching it back and seeing Nathan — who he truly is — is rather refreshing to me,” Joe said, adding that he was already familiar with how Nathan could react during disagreements.
Joe also claimed that Nathan’s personality could change quickly during tense moments and said viewers would see more of that side of him as the season continued.
At the same time, Joe has been focused on showing his own growth.
After becoming involved in relationship drama during earlier seasons, he said he wanted his work to become his main priority and hoped viewers would notice a more mature version of him.
Joe also acknowledged regrets about some of his past behavior and said he had learned from previous mistakes.
Now, however, the deck team faces a different type of drama.
With Nathan planning to return, Joe temporarily holding the bosun position and both men apparently offering Max a path to becoming lead deckhand, Max could become a crucial figure in the growing rivalry.
Nathan’s private request may have been simple — “Have my back” — but Max’s decision could have major consequences for the crew dynamic as the season moves forward.
