Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is speaking out about the newly announced spinoff Legends, confirming that he will not be involved in the upcoming project — but making it clear that Charlie Hunnam has his full support.
Sutter addressed the news in an Instagram video on Thursday, August 20, after receiving questions from fans about the project. He explained that Legends is not connected to the characters or mythology he originally created for Sons of Anarchy.
“I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be,” Sutter said, describing the miniseries as more focused on the “legacy” of Sons of Anarchy than a traditional continuation of the original series.
According to Sutter, Hunnam approached him while developing the idea and before pitching it to FX. Hunnam asked for his blessing, and Sutter said he was happy to give it.
“I gave Charlie my full blessing,” Sutter shared, adding that he wishes “nothing but the best for him in this project.”
Sutter also revealed that his wife, Katey Sagal, who played Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, will appear in Legends. He even got an early glimpse at the script after spotting it on Sagal’s “knitting table” and praised what he saw.
“It’s so well-done, and I think you’ll dig it,” Sutter said, adding that he believes fans will have “mad love” for the upcoming project.
Hunnam and Sagal are not the only familiar faces returning. Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi are also set to appear.
The premise of Legends will follow members of the Sons of Anarchy cast as they reunite at a fan convention more than a decade later. The line between fiction and reality begins to blur when the fractured group finds itself confronting a real-world threat.
Hunnam will star in the miniseries while also serving as an executive producer. The project will be produced by FX Productions and 20th Television.
FX Entertainment president Nick Grad praised Hunnam’s concept, describing the project as both a “love letter” to Sons of Anarchy and a playful meta twist on what longtime fans expect from the franchise.
Although Sutter won’t be directly involved, his enthusiastic endorsement suggests Legends has the blessing of the man who created the world that inspired it.
