The Family Stone is officially getting a sequel, with the original cast set to reunite more than 20 years after the beloved holiday movie first hit theaters.
Searchlight Pictures announced the news on Saturday, September 12, teasing the title The Families Stone and confirming that many familiar faces will return.
Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider and Brian J. White are all expected to reprise their roles.
The new film is reportedly set around 20 years after the events of the 2005 original.
According to the supplied story, the Stone family will come together again for Christmas — only to discover that their father, played by Craig T. Nelson, has invited a new romantic partner to join the holiday gathering.
That setup mirrors the family tension that helped define the first movie, where Everett brought his girlfriend Meredith home for Christmas before the relationships within the family took several unexpected turns.
The sequel will also carry a more emotional meaning following the death of Diane Keaton, who played family matriarch Sybil Stone.
Keaton died in October 2025 at age 79.
In the original movie, Sybil’s character was dealing with terminal cancer and had died by the end of the film.
Writer-director Thomas Bezucha, who also made the first movie, is returning for the sequel and has said the project will honor Keaton’s legacy.
Bezucha previously explained that Sybil’s absence has already been an emotional part of writing the new story.
Luke Wilson has also spoken about returning to the franchise, saying he was excited after reading the script and praised Bezucha’s work.
Wilson added that the sequel would likely feel even more meaningful following Keaton’s death, remembering how important she was to the original cast.
The first Family Stone became known for its mix of comedy, romance and emotional family drama, with the ensemble cast helping turn it into a holiday favorite for many viewers.
Now, the sequel is expected to revisit that same family dynamic while showing how the Stone family has changed after two decades.
Further plot details and an official release date have not yet been announced.
