Ransom Canyon may have ended after two seasons, but the writers had already started mapping out where the story would go next.
Before Netflix canceled the series, showrunner April Blair revealed that the season 3 writers’ room was already underway — and several major relationships, new characters and storylines were being developed.
One of the biggest plans involved Staten and Quinn, played by Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly.
Blair made it clear that she viewed them as the central couple of the series.
“For me, Staten and Quinn are meant to be together,” she said, explaining that she did not want to continue repeatedly breaking them up and bringing them back together.
Instead, season 3 would have explored what happens after two people finally choose each other.
Blair teased that their relationship would have faced new challenges, including secrets, everyday conflicts and deeper emotional issues.
Staten may have dealt with survivor’s guilt, while Quinn reportedly had a few secrets of her own that could have complicated their future.
The focus would no longer have been on whether the two would get together — but whether their relationship could survive everything that came after.
Ellie and Yancy’s Future Was Far Less Certain
Season 2 ended with Ellie and Yancy separated after welcoming their first child together.
Blair said their romantic future remained very much undecided.
She suggested that having a child together did not automatically mean they were destined to reunite.
The pair might have eventually found their way back to each other — or they could have learned how to successfully coparent while moving on romantically.
Kai was also expected to remain part of Ellie’s story.
Blair described Ellie’s situation as a battle between “her head and her heart,” with one relationship offering passion while the other represented safety and stability.
Lucas and Lauren Were Considered Endgame
While Ellie and Yancy’s future was uncertain, Blair was much more confident about Lucas and Lauren.
She described them as “very endgame,” though she wasn’t sure whether viewers would ever actually see that future play out during the series.
The plan was to let both characters experience other relationships and grow individually before potentially finding their way back to one another.
Garrett Wareing, who played Lucas, also strongly supported the idea.
He said Lauren remained the love of Lucas’ life and joked that if the pair were not eventually endgame, he would “never believe in love again.”
New Characters Were Coming
Season 3 was also expected to introduce several new faces.
Blair wanted to explore more of Lucas and Kit’s family, including their parents and the complicated relationship with their absent father.
She also teased the possibility of finally learning more about Staten’s mother.
The goal was to continue expanding the world of Ransom Canyon while bringing previously unseen family relationships into the story.
Lucas Was Getting a Bigger Story
After a difficult season 2, Lucas was expected to receive more attention in season 3.
Blair wanted to introduce a new romantic interest who could give Lucas a fresh experience before any eventual reunion with Lauren.
Wareing also hinted that Lucas’ romantic life could mature as the character continued growing up.
Music Would Have Played an Even Bigger Role
Music had already become an important part of Ransom Canyon, and Blair wanted to expand that element further.
After featuring performers such as Charley Crockett, Jordan Davis and Thomas Rhett, season 3 may have introduced another musician as an actual character in the story.
Quinn’s growing business — including Gracie’s and the old theater — was expected to become a larger musical hub within the fictional town.
Unfortunately, those plans will remain unrealized following Netflix’s decision to cancel the series after season 2.
