Soccer legend Alex Morgan may have spent years competing at the highest level of the sport, but when it comes to her own children, she is happy to stay on the sidelines for now.
Morgan, 37, said she is not in a hurry to become her daughter Charlie’s soccer coach and is currently enjoying a simpler role as a supportive parent.
“Right now, I’m just a parent. We’ll see in the future,” Morgan told Us while celebrating the CVS Home Team Heroes Contest on Thursday, August 20. She added that she has not been asked to coach yet and is enjoying being the person cheering her children on.
Morgan shares daughter Charlie, 6, and son Enzo, 16 months, with her husband, Servando Carrasco. She also noted that she is not even sure Charlie would want her famous soccer-playing mom as a coach.
For Morgan, the most important thing for young children in sports is simply enjoying themselves.
“At this point, all kids need to know at 6 and 7 years old is just have fun,” she explained, emphasizing the value of staying active, spending time with friends and building positive memories around sports. Technical skills, she said, can develop later.
For now, Morgan joked that she is more than willing to handle another important team-parent responsibility: bringing the snacks.
Her approach reflects a broader philosophy about youth sports. Morgan believes parents should provide encouragement and confidence rather than constantly focusing on performance, criticism or winning.
“There’s a time and place for criticism or improvement or feedback, and a lot of that falls on the coach,” Morgan said. She explained that parents should be the first source of support when a child feels disappointed after a difficult game, helping them regain confidence and want to keep participating.
Morgan is also using her platform to recognize young soccer players making an impact beyond the field. Through her partnership with CVS Health’s Home Team Heroes Contest, parents and guardians can nominate soccer players ages 7 to 15 who demonstrate leadership, service and a positive influence in their communities.
The contest runs through September 25. Two grand prize winners will receive a $25,000 grant in their name for their nonprofit soccer organization, and their photos will appear on packaging for select Well Market snacks from CVS Pharmacy.
Morgan said she appreciates that the initiative celebrates children who are working to improve not only their own futures but also the lives of people around them.
The former soccer star is also preparing for another major family milestone as she awaits the arrival of her third baby this fall. As a parent, Morgan said some of the feedback she values most is hearing that her children are kind, helpful and caring toward others.
She specifically praised qualities such as sharing, listening and encouraging other children — traits she considers meaningful measures of success both on and off the field.
As another school year and soccer season begin, Morgan hopes more children have the opportunity to experience the sport she grew up loving. But for parents watching from the sidelines, her message is straightforward: support comes first, and winning does not have to be everything.
